For years, I asked myself that very question. Then one day I stopped worrying about labels and kept writing.

That first story became my first published novel.

Since then, I’ve learned that every writer’s journey is unique. Some of us are just beginning. Others are polishing a manuscript or wondering what comes next.

For Starters…

Pantsers, Planners & How long is your story?

There are two types of writers:

Pantsers & Planners

Pantsers write “freeform” – they sit down and start telling a story, starting with a blank page and letting ‘er rip — flying by the seat of their pants. Hence, “pantsers.”

Planners like to plan: outlines, chapters, characters, settings, etc. all lined up neatly for their creative process. You’ll find mood boards, sketches, books full of outlines, charts, character development sheets, research notes and more.

Which is correct? BOTH!!

The Story Length:

Once you start writing and get your story going, it helps to figure out along the way how long the story might be. 

Or, you write a story and aren’t sure where it falls. Here’s a Handy-Dandy guide for ya:

·  Micro-fiction: Under 100 words.

·  Flash fiction: 100–1,000 words.

·  Short story: 1,000–7,500 words. These typically focus on a single event and are meant to be read in one sitting.

·  Novelette: 7,500–17,500 words.

·  Novella: 17,500–40,000 words.

·  Novel: 40,000 to 120,000+ words. Standard novels usually fall between 50,000 and 100,000 words
